September Health Tip

September is National Recovery Month, an opportunity to celebrate individuals in recovery, recognize treatment providers, and educate the public about substance use and mental health recovery.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 22.3 million adults considered themselves to be in recovery or have recovered from a drug or alcohol use problem in 2025. That represents 73% of adults who reported ever experiencing a problem with their drug or alcohol use. The same survey found that 84 percent of people who needed substance use treatment in 2025 did not receive it.

“Most people who develop a problem with substance use do recover, but too many never get any support at all,” said Justin Mitchell, Senior Vice President and Chief Program Officer. “For many individuals, recovery does not happen in a straight line, and it may take more than one attempt. That is why we screen for substance use wherever a person first makes contact, so support is there at the start and there again each time they return.”

At VIP Community Services, we support individuals on their paths toward recovery through comprehensive behavioral health, substance use treatment, housing, and supportive services. We work to create a compassionate, welcoming environment where individuals can access the care they need to move forward.

This National Recovery Month, we celebrate the progress of those in recovery and recognize the families, providers, and communities that help make recovery possible.
